COVID 19: WHAT'S MISSING?
This series was made at home on pre-treated cotton fabric during the lock-down phase of the pandemic in March-May, 2020. Each cloth panel highlights missing basic medical supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE) needed throughout the lingering pandemic, i.e., masks, gloves, sanitizers, testing reagents, etc.
During this time, homemade masks became a necessity. As a nod to the DIY spirit, each fabric panel is hand-stitched with embroidery thread that was on hand at the time. The simple, uncontrolled nature of the sun print, and the crude unbalanced or floating images in each piece signify our struggle with continuous uncertainty. In addition, the blue color, while calming and peaceful, also implies loneliness that is coupled with the shadowy missing items in the image, a metaphor for all that is absent...our friends and family, those working at home, the unemployed, or those who are quarantined, hospitalized, or have died. Thus far, 25 fabric panels (8.5" X 11") have been completed. For more information contact: [email protected].
