About Didi Garza

Didi Garza is a Houston-based artist working through cyanotype, painting, drawing, collage, and sculpture to think about the intersections between biosciences, conceptual art, emotional and spiritual, and dreamlike states. With a nod to surrealism and her Hispanic roots, she represents contrasting forces as light & dark, presence & absence, image & shadow, consciousness & unconsciousness, or divine & physical. Many works hint at cellular or molecular imagery, investigating systems of interconnections, undulations, furrows, protrusions, & muscular or lobular forms. Using cyanotype processes in novel ways, the deep shades of blue encompass many symbolic meanings for the artist including role of water or sky in all aspects of biological nature, divine connotations (after-life, ubiquitous presence, God’s power), & the color's positive effects on the mind & body. Through this work, she plumbs quiet reflection about what's present or missing, what do the forms/marks mean, & how does one interpret the strangeness.
